How to quickly record my screen on a Mac?
To start recording your screen immediately, press Command + Shift + 5 to open macOS's built-in screen capture tool. Select either "Record Entire Screen" or "Record Selected Portion", then click the Record button (or press Command + Ctrl + R). For audio recording, click "Options" to enable microphone input. Press the Stop button in the menu bar or use Command + Ctrl + Esc to end recording, which saves automatically to your desktop as an MP4 file.
Advanced Options & Tips
For system audio capture (without microphone), use QuickTime Player (File > New Screen Recording) and select "Internal Sound" from the audio dropdown. To record specific app windows, hold Option while clicking the window in the recording selector. All recordings use efficient H.264 encoding by default, but you can change formats in QuickTime's export options for smaller file sizes or higher quality.
Mac’s built-in screen recording tool usually involves multiple steps, making it hard to achieve quick screen recording. In contrast, third-party software can help you record your screen much faster. For example, iBoysoft MagicMenu is a right-click extension tool that I’ve used for screen recording. After a simple setup, you can start recording with just one click, making the process incredibly fast and convenient.
